Women’s meaningful participation is vital for building sustainable peace and security. Our Women Managing Weapons initiative directly addresses the gender imbalance in the humanitarian Weapons and Ammunition Management (WAM) and wider arms control sectors, empowering women to take on technical and leadership roles that are traditionally male dominated.
Conflict leaves behind a lethal tide of weapons and ammunition. Communities will not be safe until these weapons are secured or destroyed. The safe and secure management of weapons and ammunition reduces the risk of their illict diversion or unplanned explosions, creating safer communities. Women have a key role to play in this sector.
HALO is providing specialised technical and project management training to expand women's access to critical skills in technical areas, such as weapons and ammunition stockpile management, and preparing them to become leaders. With approximately 50 per cent of our WAM project management staff being women, HALO is actively shaping the future of arms control, ensuring that women's voices and perspectives are included within global security efforts.
“Personally, this training has provided me with the confidence and expertise to excel in this field, challenging stereotypes and proving that we are capable leaders and professionals in WAM.”
The Women Managing Weapons project works to break down barriers that have historically excluded women from the WAM sector, such as lack of training opportunities, lack of mentorship, and limited career opportunities. With the support of Global Affairs Canada, we provide fully funded training to ensure that women from diverse backgrounds—whether from policy, advocacy, or project management—can access and thrive in their current and future roles. This inclusive approach not only promotes gender equality but also brings a broader range of expertise to arms control, making the sector more responsive to evolving security challenges.
The UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) emphasises the critical role of women in peace and security efforts. By increasing women’s representation and visibility in technical and operational roles, we are creating a more inclusive, effective, and sustainable approach to arms control. Through mentorship, networking opportunities, and career development pathways we are empowering the next generation of female leaders and decision makers helping to ensure they are better equipped to meaningfully contribute to addressing complex global security issues.
“I believe in promoting the inclusion of women in this male-dominated field, as diversity will bring unique perspectives and strengths to the effective management of weapons and ammunition. By breaking stereotypes and encouraging more women to enter and excel in this area, it will not only promote gender equality, it will also enhance the overall quality and security of WAM practices.”
As we approach the 25th anniversary of UN Resolution 1325, our initiative holds even greater significance. Through our work, we are advancing the Women Peace and Security (WPS) agenda by enhancing women’s leadership in peace and security, challenging outdated gender biases, and fostering a diverse, impactful and intersectional approach to WAM.
