Jordan is a hub for clearing the region of the debris of war
AMMAN–
During a visit to Amman, Major General James Cowan, CEO of The HALO Trust, attended an audience today with His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan to discuss Jordan’s role in clearing the region of landmines and other explosive remnants of war.
General Cowan briefed His Majesty on the humanitarian impact of landmines and IEDs in the region and thanked him for Jordan’s help and support.
James Cowan said: “The humanitarian need in the Middle East is enormous. The people of this region are among the worst-affected by landmines, IEDs and explosive debris of all kinds. We are extremely grateful for the support of His Majesty and the help being provided to HALO by Jordan.”

NOTE TO EDITORS:
The HALO Trust is the world’s largest humanitarian mine clearance organisation. HALO creates safe and secure environments in war torn communities by clearing landmines, managing stockpiles of weapons and destroying unexploded ordnance. It was founded in 1988 and has over 7,300 full-time staff operating in conflict and post conflict zones in 19 countries and territories.
Jordan's was the first country in the region to be declared landmine free in 2012. The expertise Jordanian demining teams acquired during the clearance of 136,000 mines in the Northern Border Clearance Project, as well as minefields in the Jordan Valley and Wadi Araba region, have contributed to Jordan’s leadership as a regional and international hub of expertise in mine-action programmes.
