CAR - International mine awareness day
International Mine Awareness Day in Central African Republic
For International Mine Awareness day, The HALO Trust participated in an event organised by our partner UNMAS at Lakouanga School in Bangui, Central African Republic.
The event was attended by representatives from the UN, CAR authorities, FSD, IRAD and the local community and focussed around the theme of “more than mines” (“bien plus que des mines”).
Following the speech given by UNMAS Programme Manager and local dignitaries, the guests were shown an example of a risk education lesson. HALO carried out a demonstration of UXO demolition and organized the weapon cutting demonstration together with the Central African Security Forces.
The HALO Trust has been working in Bangui since October 2014, carrying out explosive ordnance disposal and processing stockpiles of weapons. CAR is still recovering from a very recent conflict, and unexploded ordnance is a serious threat to the residents of Bangui, development and continued peace in the country.
